Published research on MOTS-c
The summaries below describe peer-reviewed literature for educational and reference purposes only. They do not describe uses of this product, which is sold for laboratory research only.
MOTS-c promotes muscle differentiation in vitro
Authors: Sandra GarcÃa-Benlloch, Francisco Revert-Ros, Jose Rafael Blesa, Rafael Alis
Source: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0196978122001061
In human LHCN-M2 and mouse C2C12 myoblasts, wild-type MOTS-c increased myotube formation and counteracted the IL-6-induced reduction of nuclear myogenin, while a Y8F variant did not. The proposed mechanism involves MOTS-c interacting with STAT3 through its YIFY motif.
The mitochondrial genome-encoded peptide MOTS-c interacts with Bcl-2 to alleviate nonalcoholic steatohepatitis progression
Authors: Huanyu Lu, Linni Fan, Wenli Zhang, Guo Chen, An Xiang, Li Wang, Zifan Lu, Yue Zhai
Source: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2211124723015991
Researchers reported that MOTS-c binds the BH3 domain of Bcl-2 and stabilizes it by suppressing ubiquitination. Using a Bcl-2 inhibitor and AAV-mediated knockdown in steatohepatitis models, they examined mitochondrial function, inflammatory and fibrotic markers, and metabolomic profiles.
MOTS-c modulates skeletal muscle function by directly binding and activating CK2
Authors: Hiroshi Kumagai, Su-Jeong Kim, Brendan Miller, et al.
Source: https://www.cell.com/iscience/fulltext/S2589-0042(24)02437-4
In cell-free systems, MOTS-c bound directly to and activated protein kinase CK2, whereas the naturally occurring K14Q variant showed reduced binding and no activation, linking this interaction to MOTS-c’s effects on skeletal-muscle metabolism.
Storage and handling
